Genesis GV60 Magma Concept: a new performance mark erupts on the EV scene

The Genesis GV60 Magma Concept will usher in a new breed of fierce Genesis EVs that are set for the UK roads.

Genesis has unveiled the GV60 Magma Concept, marking the inception of its new ‘Magma’ performance division and offering a glimpse at the first pure EV Genesis performance car.

Scheduled for release next year, the GV60 Magma represents Genesis' first venture into the world of high-performance electric vehicles. It will be showcased alongside other Magma-inspired models at the New York International Auto Show from 29 March to 7 April. A new premium SUV was also unveiled alongside the Magma concept named the Genesis Neolun Concept and that is also said to be coming to the UK, possibly as the Genesis GV90.

Built on the E-GMP architecture shared with vehicles like the Kia EV6 and Hyundai loniq 5, the GV60 Magma promises powerful performance. Equipped with an 84kWh battery and dual electric motors, the Genesis is expected to have more power than the 641bhp Hyundai. Speaking to DrivingElectric, Genesis CEO, Luc Donckerwolke referred to the positioning of the GV60 Magma, saying: “The hierarchy of the performance goes from top down, this being the premium”.

Externally, the GV60 Magma features enhancements over the standard GV60. There’s a 40mm widened track, lowered suspension and aerodynamic bodywork. That aerodynamic package has been specially designed to force more air into the front air intake to enhance the cooling of the batteries and maximise the airflow around the wheel arches, which in turn helps keep the brakes cool.

Those wheel arches will be filled with 21-inch wheels in an aero disk shape, which are the same size as those on the Ioniq 5 N. On the roof, you will see an array of fins that are designed to funnel air onto the new spoiler and the GV60 Magma has a new rear diffuser, too.

The changes don’t stop there, the interior of the GV60 has seen changes, including diamond quilting everywhere you look, even on the floor. There are orange bucket seats and orange stitching appears almost everywhere, while the steering wheel has an orange top centre marker.

With no definitive release date for the GV60 Magma as yet, we would expect to see the finished article by the end of the year, this car is positioned as a competitor to electric performance models like the Porsche Taycan and its Hyundai loniq 5 N sister car. The pricing hasn’t been revealed, either, but it is likely to cost in excess of the Hyundai’s £65,000 price tag.
