New MG4 EV named 2023 DrivingElectric Car of the Year

The all-new MG4 EV has been crowned the 2023 DrivingElectric Car of the Year, while also taking home the titles of Best Value Electric Car, and Readers’ Favourite Electric Car in our annual run-down of the very best electric and hybrid cars on sale. 

Editor Richard Ingram praised the budget-friendly electric hatchback: “Outstandingly capable, the MG4 combines range, practicality, and loads of kit, into a sharp-looking, fun-to-drive package – all at an unbeatable price.”

The MG4 went on sale earlier this year with a starting price of just £25,995, making it one of the cheapest new electric cars currently available in the UK. Entry-level versions of the MG4 offer 218 miles of range, while the Long Range model can cover up to 281 miles on a charge – all for less than £30k.

One of the year’s biggest surprises was the Ora Funky Cat which impressed us enough to end the Fiat 500’s reign as our Best Urban Electric Car. Meanwhile, the Skoda Enyaq iV retained its title as DrivingElectric’s Best Electric Family Car, and the new BMW i7 took home the coveted Best Luxury Electric Car. The Mercedes EQE won Best Long-Distance Electric Car thanks to its blend of super-fast charging and a long driving range.

At the sportier end of the EV spectrum, the 577bhp Kia EV6 GT was named Best Electric Performance Car, and for the first time we presented a Best Electric Hot Hatch award, which went to the Cupra Born. 

Elsewhere, the brand-new Renault Megane E-TECH won the DrivingElectric Technology Award after our expert panel of judges were blown away by the French hatchback’s Google-powered infotainment system. Ingram described it as “quite simply one of the best systems we’ve ever tested.”

DrivingElectric’s readers also voice their opinions on the year’s latest EVs and those still to come. As well as naming the MG4 EV as their favourite electric car from 2022, the drop-top MG Cyberster sports car was voted Readers’ Most Anticipated Electric Car for 2023. The final reader award went to Polestar, which won the title of Readers’ Favourite Electric Car Maker.

Kia dominated the hybrid family car categories this year, with the Sportage winning our Best Plug-In Hybrid Family Car Award, and the brand-new Niro taking home Best Hybrid Family Car. Meanwhile, the Mercedes C 300 e and Renault Captur E-TECH held onto their respective titles as DrivingElectric’s Best Plug-In Hybrid Company Car and Best Small Hybrid Car.
