Ford Mondeo to become an electrified SUV in 2022

Ford has plans to turn the its long-serving Mondeo hatchback into a crossover SUV in 2022, complete with hybrid and plug-in hybrid power

Ford Mondeo SUV spy shot

These spy shots show an all-new model due from Ford that's expected to be the next Mondeo. With the family-car market preferring SUVs to hatchbacks, salons and estates, the Mondeo is set to be reimagined as a crossover intended to appeal to a wider audience. The new car is expected to arrive in 2022.

The move is likely to be a reaction to Ford model sales: the outgoing Mondeo has struggled in its final years – just 2,400 examples of the car were bought in the UK in 2020 – while new arrivals like the Puma and revised Kuga have proved to be big sellers.

The new Mondeo crossover will replace the saloon and estate versions of the current car, while also covering off some of the space left by the now-discontinued B-MAX and C-MAX people carriers.

No official information on powertrains has been released, but it's expected the new car will share its hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains with the current Kuga family SUV. And we wouldn't be surprised if a purely electric version was also introduced at a later date.

The test vehicle in our spy shots is heavily disguised, but still gives some clues. A coupe-SUV style roofline can be discerned, as can slim LED headlights joined by larger units below. A wide hexagonal grille will keep its new look in line with other Ford models.

There are no interior shots for now, but it's safe to expect a modern treatment; DrivingElectric understands that a number of digital displays will feature, stretching the width of the dashboard.

Interestingly, Ford successfully applied for a trademark on the 'Mondeo Evos' name last year; this could be the name of the new crossover. In 2011, Ford revealed its Evos concept – a car whose shape resembles that seen in our spy shots – so it seems very likely that Ford's trademark will be used.
