New Ford E-Tourneo Custom electric MPV unveiled

The fully electric version of Ford’s large MPV offers up to 230 miles’ range and seating for eight

Ford Tourneo Custom

Meet the Ford E-Tourneo Custom: the fully electric version of the latest Tourneo Custom van-based MPV, and the passenger version of the E-Transit Custom van unveiled earlier this year. It’s due to arrive in 2023, when it’ll face-off against the Citroen e-Spacetourer, Vauxhall Vivaro Life Electric and Volkswagen ID. Buzz.

The E-Tourneo Custom uses the same running gear as the E-Transit Custom panel van, so you get a 74kWh usable battery paired with a 215bhp electric motor. Fully charged, the electric MPV offers up to 230 miles of range, while 125kW rapid charging speeds mean a 15-80% top-up is possible in 41 minutes.

According to Ford, the E-Tourneo Custom offers one-pedal driving, plus a towing capacity of up to two tonnes and generous payload capacities. It also gets a 13-inch central touchscreen running Ford’s latest SYNC 4 infotainment system, and comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Standard and long-wheelbase versions of the E-Tourneo Custom will be available, featuring seating for up to eight passengers. That includes six seats fitted in the rear passenger compartment, and thanks to floor rails it should be easier to change seating layouts compared to the old Tourneo Custom

The chairs all slide and fold individually, or can be removed completely, while the middle row can be mounted facing forwards or backwards. The seats are lighter than the previous model's chairs, too, making them easier to remove, and there are ISOFIX mounts on all three seats in the middle row as well as the outer two on the third row.

Ford says the new Tourneo Custom range will deliver a more car-like passenger experience than before, while kit on offer includes a panoramic glass roof, power-operated sliding doors, a 14-speaker B&O sound system, three-zone climate control, the tilting steering wheel we saw in the E-Transit Custom and sockets inside the cabin for powering tools or camping equipment from the E-Tourneo Custom’s 74kWh battery when you need.

There will be three trim levels to choose from: Sport, off-road-inspired Active and range-topping Titanium X, but UK pricing has yet to be announced. The first examples of the E-Tourneo Custom are expected to arrive in the second half of 2023, alongside diesel and plug-in hybrid versions of the MPV.

Ford will eventually offer fully electric versions of its entire commercial van and minibus range, including the compact Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier. By 2024, Ford’s electric-car line-up will also include a Puma EV, an as-yet-unnamed "medium-sized crossover" and a "sports crossover", plus the existing Mustang Mach-E SUV.
