New Genesis Neolun concept paves the way for the GV90 SUV

With a host of new technology, the Neolun is the brands first step towards a full-size electric SUV.

Genesis has unveiled the Neolun concept, alongside the GV60 Magma performance model, in New York. It hints at the future arrival of a bigger EV SUV that could take on the Genesis GV90. The production version of the Genesis Neolun will have a completely electric powertrain and enter a very competitive segment which currently features the likes of the Mercedes EQS, Volvo EX90 and the BMW iX.

We know that the production version of the Neolun will eventually come to the UK but there has been no potential on sale dates provided. The price is expected to be in excess of £100,000 when the car enters the ever-expanding premium EV SUV sector.

The technical details remain undisclosed to us at this point, however it’s clear that the Neolun is considerably bigger than the Genesis GV80, which currently stands as the firm's largest model. It is expected to adopt E-GMP architecture already used on Hyundai and Kia models, possibly featuring a battery setup akin to the one in Kia EV9. That would mean Genesis has the option of either a 76.1kWh or a 99.8kWh battery, but given the luxury goals, it seems more likely to be the latter, which is enough for a quoted 336-miles in the Kia.

Derived from the Latin ‘Luna’, meaning moon, married together with the Greek ‘neo’ meaning ‘new’ to create ‘new moon’. Genesis Chief Creative Officer, Luc Donckerwolke told DrivingElectric that “Neolun was inspired by Korea’s iconic moon-shaped porcelain jars”.

The exterior of the Neolun is described as being centred on the concept of "reductive design," aimed at achieving a sleek and minimalist appearance. Notable features include a front end with headlights reminiscent of recent Genesis concepts, characterised by two lines wrapping around the sides of the car, interrupted by the front wheel arch. The lower intake on the front showcases diamond-shaped grille inserts, a signature design element of Genesis vehicles. Moving to the rear, the design maintains continuity with the front, featuring two parallel light bars that echo the lines of the headlights.

Examining the side profile of the Neolun reveals its upright stance, complemented by striking wheels and the absence of both door handles and B-pillars. According to Genesis, this design choice “maximises passenger convenience during entry and exit”. Additionally, electric side steps automatically deploy when the doors open, hoping to enhance accessibility for passengers.

Stepping inside, occupants are greeted by a cabin dominated by a large central screen on the dashboard. A dial on the centre console suggests a control mechanism for the vehicle's gears, in line with Genesis' current design language. The front-row seats offer swivel functionality, allowing them to face the rear seats for increased versatility. Above, two screens fold out from the ceiling, providing additional entertainment options for passengers. The interior is finished with 'Royal Indigo' leather upholstery complemented by 'Purple Silk' accents throughout the cabin. The interior is finished off with a dark-coloured real wood floor which aims to add a level of sophistication to the overall ambiance.
