Lucid Gravity electric seven-seater draws masses at LA Auto Show

Lucid’s electric SUV gets seven seats, a 34-inch screen and a range of up to 440 miles

The much-anticipated Lucid Gravity has touched down at the LA Auto Show. The seven-seater, all-electric SUV follow up to the futuristic Lucid Air saloon, the Gravity intends to pull you in (pun intended) with its luxurious, tech-filled interior and claimed 440-mile range.

Due to arrive across the pond next year – there’s no word yet whether it will come to the UK – the Lucid Gravity aims to take a swing at the likes of the Tesla Model X and the forthcoming Range Rover EV with a range of over 440 miles. This, Lucid says, comes from a fittingly large 120kWh battery pack utilising state-of-the-art power-dense battery technology which the company supplies for use in Formula E racing.

Of course, it’s not only the battery tech helping the Gravity achieve its impressive range figure; despite its wide proportions, Lucid says the flagship SUV has a drag coefficient of just 0.24Cd, which is about the same as an Audi e-tron GT. The Lucid Gravity also gets the same Dodge Charger-esque bonnet overhang as the sleeker Air, as well as a full-width light bar at the front and rear.

The real excitement lies inside, however, as the Lucid Gravity gets a stunning 34-inch OLED screen that wraps around the driver; unlike in most other cars with similar setups – including the Lucid Air – this is one continuous panel and not several screens mounted alongside each other. It’s also supplemented by another touchscreen for all of your media controls and sits above a squared-off steering wheel.

Elsewhere, like the Air saloon, the Gravity looks to be wrapped in luxurious materials such as leather and solid aluminium trim pieces. The windscreen itself sweeps backwards behind the first row of seats, while there’s also an additional panoramic sunroof for those in the back, both designed to elevate the sense of space inside. Rear passengers get their own touchscreen mounted behind the centre console, as well as fold-down aeroplane-style tray tables.

In fact, Lucid has teamed up with mental health experts and service providers, Meditopia, to develop specialised wellbeing mode for inside the Gravity. Dubbed Lucid Sanctuary, this utilises the Gravity’s screens, speakers, massage function and ambient lighting to transform the interior into a relaxing environment; for example, a tranquil forest.

As you can expect from a car named ‘Gravity’, space is the name of the game with Lucid’s latest model; the American firm claims the Gravity offers up to 3,171 litres of cargo volume with all the seats folded flat. There’s also a ‘frunk’ in which the load lip is low enough that two people can use it as a bench.

Of course, much remains under wraps for now, including exact power figures. Also unknown is whether the Lucid Gravity will come to the UK, with it expected to start from under $80,000 (roughly £65,000 at the current exchange rate) when it goes on sale in the U.S next year.
