Maserati Grecale Folgore: Italian Porsche Macan rival goes electric… but at a price

Electric Maserati SUV gets 550bhp, a 311-mile range and a price of almost £110,000

Meet the Maserati Grecale Folgore: the Italian maker’s rival to the all-electric Porsche Macan that is now on sale from £109,950 – over £40,000 more than its German competitor.

Arriving after the petrol-powered Grecale which made its debut all the way back in 2022, the Folgore swaps that car’s four-cylinder mild-hybrid and V6 powertrains for a dual-motor, four-wheel drive set-up which produces a combined 550bhp and 820Nm of torque.

According to Maserati, this is sufficient for 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds, making the electric Grecale almost a second slower than the top-spec Macan Turbo, which still costs £15k less than the Folgore.

Still, these are pretty potent numbers for an electric family SUV, and in order to power it all, the Folgore gets a 105kWh battery which, Maserati claims, provides up to 311 miles of range on a single charge. While this is, once again, less than what’s possible in the 380-mile Porsche, a 20-80% top-up only takes 29 minutes thanks to 150kW DC ultra-rapid charging.

In terms of styling, the most obvious differences between the electric and combustion-engined Grecales are the grille design, which is partly blanked off to aid aerodynamics, and a smattering of copper ‘Folgore’ badges. The electric Grecale also gets several sets of model-specific alloy wheels which feature aerodynamic trim piece to, once again, help with airflow.

Inside, the Folgore is upholstered in a new material called Econyl, which Maserati says is made from recycled fishing nets. There’s also the choice of white and part-blue denim seats, although these will set you back an eye-watering £3,890. Elsewhere, the electric Grecale looks to be almost identical to its petrol counterpart, with no less than four screens servicing the front occupants, including a digital clock/lap timer on the dashboard.

Prospective owners looking to use the Grecale Folgore as a family car will be pleased to know that its 535-litre capacity is no less practical than the four-cylinder mild hybrid. Maserati is also throwing in at the point of purchase a branded 22kW AC charger, which will allow owners to top their car up at home.

The release of the electric Grecale follows that of the 900bhp+ Maserati GranTurismo Folgore, which went on sale next year. The Italian brand also plans to launch a ‘GranCabrio’ convertible version of that car in the near future, as well as an all-new all-electric version of its Quattroporte saloon by the end of the decade.
