The claimed official fuel-economy and CO2 emissions figures for the Toyota Corolla hatchback vary considerably, depending on whether you go for the 1.8 or 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain, and exactly what size of alloy wheel you specify. CO2 emissions run from 98 to 111g/km and economy ranges from 60 to just over 64mpg, which is broadly competitive with hybrid rivals such as the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid (63mpg) and Kia Niro (60mpg).

Toyota Corolla hybrid MPG & CO2 emissions

The most efficient Corolla hatchback is the 2.0-litre Icon on 16-inch wheels, which emits 98g/km of CO2 and returns around 62mpg, according to Toyota’s figures. Increasing wheel size to 17 or 18 inches ups the emissions to as much as 108g/km, while the 1.8-litre hybrid engine emits 100-111g/km of CO2 and will return 60-64mpg on a combined cycle.

The Corolla will make the most difference to your running costs if you regularly tackle low-speed, stop-start urban driving. This gives the car's hybrid drivetrain the greatest opportunity to run in electric mode, with Toyota claiming that up to 50% of a typical commute can be covered on battery power. For those who do more long-distance motorway runs, however, a modern diesel or an electric car with a large battery pack and rapid charging may make more financial sense.
